YURAKUCHO ART SIGHT PROJECT Vol.3
THE COPY TRAVELERS’S 22-COLORED FLYING CARPET

“YURAKUCHO ART SIGHT PROJECT” is a project that aims to create new interactions between the city and art using temporary enclosures and facades as a stage. By installing artworks created through research by artists in the city, the project aims to bring diverse perspectives and ideas to the city and create communication between the artworks and the people on the streets.
THE COPY TRAVELERS (a.k.a. Copitra) is an artist unit formed by Shunsuke Kano, Teppei Sako, and Yaya Ueda. They explore the possibilities of “reproduction” and “collage” through a variety of experiments, such as combining images collected from photographs and printed matter using tools such as photocopiers, scanners, and cameras. For the production of this temporary enclosure, Copitra set up a production space at YAU STUDIO on the 10th floor of the Yurakucho Building from September 2022, collected old maps of Yurakucho and other areas, old magazines and printed matter of various genres, and improvised collages of them on a copy machine. In “22-Colored Flying Carpet,” the work presented this time, the artist captures the way images fly freely like a magic carpet by scanning images completed as a collage work with a copy machine having the cover open. A cluster of images, combined in an accidental and multi-layered manner, floats around the 70-meter temporary enclosure.
