TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH (TPR) is an artist collective founded by artist Taisuke Koyama, consisting of artists and researchers broadly involved in photographic expression. TPR was established in 2018 to document, express, and archive the rapidly transforming Tokyo through contemporary photography and video, prompted by the large-scale redevelopment associated with the Olympics. With missions such as “multifaceted urban research,” “pragmatic exploration of contemporary photography,” and “developmental research on photographic culture,” TPR aims to visualize the unseen aspects of the city, society, and people, and to carry forward the visions discovered into the future.

So far, we have implemented over 50 projects in five years with a total of 70 artists and groups. These include creating works and organizing exhibitions based on urban and regional research, collaboration projects with government agencies and corporations, joint programs with educational institutions in Japan and abroad, international exchange projects with the embassies of the Netherlands and Switzerland, online meetings aimed at connecting East Asian photography communities, and research on experimental photographic expressions. In recent years, we have also focused on nurturing young artists and art managers, fostering international photography communities, and engaging in activities aimed at establishing cultural, social, and economic platforms for contemporary Japanese photographic expression.
