“YURAKUCHO ART SIGHT PROJECT” is a project that aims to create new interactions between the city and art using temporary enclosures and facades as a stage. By installing artworks created through research by artists in the city, the project aims to bring diverse perspectives and ideas to the city and create communication between the artworks and the people on the streets.
As the first project, photographer Gu Kenryou and artist Kosuke Nagata presented new works on the theme of Yurakucho on the temporary wall of the Shinkokusai Building. For this project, Gu has photographed the Yurakucho area from the rooftops of the Yurakucho Denki Building, Marunouchi Nijubashi Building, Tokyo Building Tokia, and Yurakucho Ekimae Building, capturing a bird’s-eye view of the city. He creates his works using what he calls “digital weaving,” a method of creating a single image from multiple photographs. Kosuke Nagara presented a series of works capturing the landscape of Yurakucho are based on an object detection algorithm using artificial intelligence, the same kind used in automated driving technology. This work shows that our perceptions are not merely visual, but are made up of a variety of contextual knowledge, and that our perception of cities is inherently diverse and cannot be done mechanically and uniformly.
