OVERNATURE
TOKYO PHOTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH conducted its research and production as a team of three—Taisuke Koyama, Takanori Kawahara, and Shota Tsukiyama. During our three-day stay, we set out from Kisaiya Road to visit Uwajima Castle, Warei Shrine and more. We examined old maps and historical photographs at the library, and also traveled to Kyuto island, Yusu, and the Hosogi Canal. At any time of day—morning, noon, or evening—Kisaiya Road had a gentle, calm atmosphere, and it felt as if the entire city of Uwajima was quietly breathing between the sea and the mountains.
Deeply drawn to the history of the people of Uwajima, who have shaped nature to cultivate their own culture—through pearl and sea bream aquaculture, or the creation of terraced fields—we collected local processed goods and seashells and transformed them into hand-crafted washi paper. Our work OVERNATURE is created by projecting photographs onto these materials, compressed into a flat plane as washi, and then photographing the overlapping state of image and matter. Through this experimental approach, we sought to create a new form of connection with nature.
