Fly Ahead
I first heard the story that ‘airplanes cannot fly over the Imperial Palace’ during a reading group I hosted at my university. It wasn’t until six months later that I learned this wasn’t actually true; rather, flight routes simply do not pass near the Imperial Palace. The buildings around Japan’s Imperial Palace have been subject to height regulations to ensure that they do not overlook the palace. In Fly Ahead, I create images of aircraft flying dangerously close to the Imperial Palace—an impossible scenario in reality—and embed them into advertising panels.
