UMEZAWA HIDEKI
Unseen Glimmer
This work is composed of sound recorded through fieldwork on Sarushima—including underwater recordings—and layered with photographs taken on the island at night, along with images of preserved botanical specimens from local museums.
When we look or listen through devices such as cameras or microphones, we sometimes sense an ambience—a presence of the environment—that lies beyond the normal thresholds of human perception.
In such moments, entities that are usually hidden in the background seem to emerge.
Even in the complete darkness of the island, I always hope to approach that state—where, through the body and senses, I can begin to perceive what is usually unseen or unheard.
