MATSUI YUU (SEKIKAWA TAKUYA)
It said that the phosphorescence emitted by decaying creatures was the spark created by fairies
As the buildings of Yurakucho begin to be dismantled, the city is undergoing a transformation. In this work, Matsui envisions the creation of a new myth for Yurakucho. Myths often feature mythical beasts and fairies. For instance, in shamanic traditions, transformations into spirit animals were essential to human efforts to engage with nature—animals played a vital role in unifying people. In this myth, Matsui introduces two animals: the panda and the swan. Despite much of their behavior remaining mysterious, pandas captivate us with their curious and endearing actions. Swans, which can be found even in the moat of the Imperial Palace, are migratory birds that have appeared in many myths due to their elegant and noble presence. “I want to make them the fairies of Yurakucho,” Matsui says. “Possessing supernatural strength, they occasionally help humans—or play tricks on them. In those moments, it is our love that will move them. We must love the city of Yurakucho—even the smallest fragments of it. Surely many people already do. A new city is created by the people who move through it. We must be loved by the fairies of Yurakucho.”

MATSUI YUU (SEKIKAWA TAKUYA)
Born in Tokyo. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Komazawa University, began self-teaching in video, photography, painting, and 3D production following the receipt of the Excellence Award at the 2016 New Cosmos of Photography. Having suffered from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder rooted in childhood trauma, their work is shaped by this background of mental illness. Themes explored include “sympathy for pandas and a desire for transformation,” “viruses/smartphones/frames,” and “photography as vandalism/photography as a device for regeneration.” Since 2022, they have been active under the name “Yuu Matsui (Takuya Sekikawa).” Takuya Sekikawa is a high school classmate, but the two realized they shared a sense similar to the “TACHIKOMA” from Ghost in the Shell—a feeling that their brains are linked via the cloud, allowing the synchronization of knowledge and experience—and they occasionally collaborate on creative projects.
