A NEW SCALE

A NEW SCALE is a collective researching urban design, traversing between genres, drawing on scales from the body to the city/society. Led by editor Sawako Fukai and urban designer Yuki Uchida, the group archives dialogues with guests from various fields who cross disciplines with a focus on the body, urban design and art.

AMIMORI SHOHEI

Born in Tokyo, in 1990. Musician and composer. Graduated from the Department of Composition, Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts and from the Graduate School of Music of the same school. He began activities as a composer and arranger of classical and contemporary music since his student years and released many works ranging from chamber to orchestral music. In recent years, he has engaged in other genres such as pop music and sound art as well. Besides showcasing his works and performance utilizing various methods, Amimori has produced music for television advertisements and shows and participated in projects of many artists as a studio musician.

THE COPY TRAVELERS

THE COPY TRAVELERS (a.k.a. Copitra) is an artist unit formed by Shunsuke Kano, Teppei Sako, and Yaya Ueda.
They explore the possibilities of “reproduction” and “collage” through a variety of experiments, such as combining images collected from photographs and printed matter using tools such as photocopiers, scanners, and cameras.

EMMANUEL GUILLAUD

Based in Paris and sometimes Tokyo, Emmanuel Guillaud creates choreographies of projections.

In dark spaces, multiple, synchronised flows of pictures are projected on screens made of dark veils, mirrors, glass wool or concrete. The thick and textured materials rub images, blunting them. Photographic truth becomes uncertain. Projection becomes phantasmagoric matter.

Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the space created by rays of light, feel the images rather than seeing them.

Born 1994, Endo AYaka graduated from Tokyo University of The Arts, Department of Design in 2021.

FUJIKURA ASAKO

Born in 1992, Asako Fujikura is an artist who focuses on the depth of infrastructure that crosses urban and suburban areas, as well as the landscapes associated with them, creating works primarily using 3DCG animation techniques. She graduated from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies with a major in Persian in 2016 and completed her Master’s degree in Media and Film at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018.

Born in Kyoto in 1994 and raised in Shanghai. Gu graduated from the Contemporary Art and Photography Course, Kyoto University of Art and Design. KAWA (ARAKAWA SHINSAKU・SEKIKAWA NORIYUKI)

The project was initiated in 2016 by two photographers Shinsaku Arakawa and Noriyuki Sekikawa. The team name comes from the character ‘river’, which is common to both their surnames. Since their teenage years, they have remained unchanged, immersed in skateboarding and photography. KAWAHARA TAKANORI

Born in 1988 in Kanagawa. Graduated from the Japan College of Photography in 2019. Working as a freelance photographer, this individual simultaneously explores the commonalities at the core of human existence. KAWASHIMA TAKASHI

In 2022, Romina Koopman completed her photography studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her artwork has been exhibited at institutions, galleries, and festivals, including Nederlands Fotomuseum, Melkweg Expo, Kunsthal KAdE, World Press Photo, Stedelijk Museum, Fotofestival Naarden, Umweltfotofestival, and Polycopies, among others. SHIMAUCHI HIDEYUKI

Born 1985 in Saga Prefecture, Japan. After working as a graphic designer, he started working with photography in 2019. He received the Jury Award from Chihiro Minato and Taisuke Koyama at the TOKYO FRONTLINE PHOTO AWARD 2022 for his series ‘Paralysis’, in which he bleached photographs of printed matter found as rubbish in the city.

SUNAYAMA TAICHI

Born in 1980. President of Sunayama Studio and Associate Professor, Department of General Science of Art, Kyoto City University of Arts.
He engages in production, design, planning and criticism rooted in a discourse on the informational and material aspects of artistic expression.
After studying sculpture in Japan he lived in France from 2004 to 2011, where he studied the use of digital technology in architectural design and worked in and with architectural and structural design offices. In addition to running a design studio in Tokyo, he pursues theoretical research on contemporary art and design at Kyoto City University of Arts.

Tamura’s work centers on installations and performances derived from existing images and objects. UMEZAWA HIDEKI

Umezawa was born in Gunma, Japan in 1986. He got MFA from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts. His work uses sounds and photos, based on his interest in prelinguistic sensory that one may feel from the surrounding environment, and also based on his curiosity towards the complexity of natural phenomena. WANG XIAOHAN

Born in Beijing. After graduating from Macerata Academy of Arts in Italy (major in illustration), 2017, she entered Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Design (research of Draw) in 2021. Wang currently stays in Tokyo to produce her work. She was a member in establishing Gunto-Insha in 2018. Entered Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Design in 2021. WATANABE YOHEI

Born in Fukushima, in 1990. Graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. He is currently enrolled in the doctoral program at the same school. Watanabe works with optical mechanisms, physicality, and poetic imagination to present his works using the mediums of installation, video, and photography. YAMAMINE JUNYA

After working as a curator at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa and Contemporary Art Centre, Art Tower Mito, he became the director of ANB Tokyo and established NYAW Inc. Major exhibitions include ‘Hello World-for the Post-Human Age’ and ‘ Resistance of Fog Fujiko Nakaya’ (Art Tower Mito) and ‘The world began without the human race, and it will end without it.’ (National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts).

Yamamoto is an artist, who explores the role of images and photography in social interaction. Having the various approaches towards making pieces of art, she tries to clarify what dazed individuals for herself.
