YURAKUCHO ART SIGHT PROJECT Vol.4 #3
FUJIKURA ASAKO | THE PROJECTIONS
The ‘YURAKUCHO ART SIGHT PROJECT’ is a project based on urban research that installs artworks on temporary enclosures. It began in 2020 with the temporary enclosure at the Kokusai Building in Yurakucho. In its fourth installment, starting in September 2023, Keita Kojima and Akihiko Taniguchi unveiled new works at the Marunouchi Park Building. Additionally, since the end of May, Asako Fujikura has been presenting new works inspired by the modern urban environment represented by Otemachi, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho.
Artist Statement
“This work addresses the issue of the global supply chain (logistics) involved in the extraction and mining from ‘other lands’ essential for the formation and maintenance of urban cities, and the transportation and distribution of these resources to ‘this land’. The extraction and mining of raw materials from the earth’s surface, underground, and the biosphere are indispensable not only for energy and mineral resources but also for the development and operation of miniaturized electronic devices, supporting both our physical and non-physical living environments.
This work consists of three murals. Two of the murals depict an overview of a fictional landscape, where an imaginary mining site exists, showing the process of materials being extracted and mined, transported, industrialized, and gradually forming an urban space, all rendered in 3DCG. In this landscape, ten pyramids with the same texture as the mining site are scattered; these are condensed and materialized ‘projections’ of fictional objects made from the extracted resources. The third mural is composed of ten fragmented images observed by these projections, which are both material and informational.”
